Through the portal

I've always liked this photo. The "ribs" of the cathedral draw your eye into the photo and then down the hallway to the light in the windows at the back.  These elements create a "portal" which draws the eye into the picture and creates visual interest.

Shooting through an open doorway or window or down a hallway is one way talented photographers keep you coming back for more. The fact that you don't know what's through that window or door or around the corner creates the question in your mind, "I wonder what's back there?" And that question is one of the things that makes the photo interesting.

I think the same holds true in life. When we look at life through a portal it's always more interesting. So, what's a portal in life? A portal in life is any opening or pathway into another realm…

  • the possibility of a new job
  • a vacation on the calendar
  • learning a new language or skill
  • putting a 5K race on the calendar and starting training
  • going to a new church
  • planning a neighborhood party
  • calling a meeting at work to discuss the vision of the company
  • taking charge of the two and three year olds in the nursery
  • going back to college to finish the degree
  • agreeing to go on the blind date
  • trying out for the community playhouse production
  • making the decision to go on short-term missions
  • pledging to give more money away next month

And so many more. The fact is, any of these "portals" or openings create interest in our lives that otherwise become predictable and boring. Jesus promised us the abundant life. But that doesn't mean it'll all come to you automatically. You've got to boldly step out towards abundance.

First find the portal.

Then take the bold step through into the unknown.
