It’s your turn

There you are…in a line of people all standing across the front the stage in the darkened theater. The stage lights are bright in your face and you can't see past the first few rows of the audience. One by one, others in the line step forward and performs their art and is greeted with applause from the audience. You wait for someone to call on you. You politely wait for your turn.

You wait and wait but nothing happens. No one calls your name.

Then you realize that no one is calling names. The others are simply stepping out in their own fear and anxiety and going for it. They screw up their courage, muster all their resources, take the step and go!

I believe that was me for the longest time in my life. I've waited for someone to pick me. I guess I had this picture that I would work along in obscurity, and finally someone would notice and pick me out of the crowd and say, "It's your turn now to do something great!"

But that never happens.

Even today I find myself waiting for someone to acknowledge me or validate my art. I hurry to the stats to see how much traffic this blog is getting or if anyone has left a meaningful comment. I know…pathetic, right? I wait. I wait.

Are you waiting too?

Get rid of the myth that there are gatekeepers like editors and publishers and directors and managers and pastors who are not picking you, standing in your way…keeping you from sharing your art with us. Or that you need some kind of endorsement from an expert or some other authority figure before you can proceed.

If you are reading this blog, then chances are you are sitting in front of one of the most powerful tools the human race has ever known. You are connected to more people and more information and more possibilities than your parents or grandparents could have imagined. There are more opportunities open to you right now than at any time in the history of man. What are you waiting for?

The fact is…we need you to step up and do what you were born to do.

Now is your turn. Today. Go.

(just in case you don't realize it…I write these blog posts for me as much as I do for you! I need the reminders!)
