2013 – A year for an adventure?

"We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things. Make you late for dinner! I can't think what anybody sees in them."  -Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit

By now most of us are probably familiar with this quote from the book (and recent movie) "The Hobbit." I just looked up the definition for the word "adventure." I like this one, "a bold, usually risky undertaking; hazardous action of uncertain outcome."

In order for it to really be an adventure…there has to be some risk involved. In that way, life is like camp. Camp wouldn't even be worth it if there wasn't something scary about it. Face it; adventure…the risk of failure or even pain is one of the things that make life worth living. Even if it means you're occasionally late for dinner.

I'm no Bible scholar but I believe that's one of the interpretations of Jesus's promise of abundant life. We'll have a full life; the high highs…but also the low lows. That's what an adventure is all about. Getting off the couch and living life to it's fullest. Rejecting the virtual in order to really embrace the real.

So, it's time to sprinkle a little adventure (or maybe some BIG adventure) in your life this year. What will you do on your adventurous journey?

  • Write a book
  • Start a blog
  • Begin a Bible study at work
  • End an unhealthy relationship
  • Learn a new language
  • Get married!
  • Go back to school
  • Ask her out
  • Begin a journal
  • Join a church
  • Volunteer
  • Adopt a child
  • Become a missionary
  • Sit down and talk with your teenager
  • Take the job
  • Join the gym
  • Memorize scripture
  • Make the phone call
  • Begin the renovation
  • Try a new recipe
  • Launch the new business
  • Follow your passion
  • Read the whole Bible
  • Bungi Jump!
  • Try out for choir
  • Learn how to change the oil in your car
  • Move out on your own
  • Get out of debt
  • Travel internationally

Okay, that's just my brainstorm. What does yours look like? What will you do to insure that 2013 is nothing like 2012? Set a goal. Make a plan. Start the adventure!

Let's ride!
