The futility of Why

The futility of Why

I think one of the biggest traps we can fall into is the trap of WHY.

Let me be clear…I’ve written in this blog before about the importance of asking the Why Question. Ask the Why question when you’re considering your plan and your strategy, the programs and events you are pouring so much time into, whenever you’re just repeating what you’ve done before…yes, by all means, ask Why.

But when thinking about your own life circumstances asking the Why Question will only serve to paralyze you. Why did I lose that job? Why didn’t I get the class I wanted? Why did my car have to break down on the expressway? Why did I grow up in the family I grew up in? Why did my dad have to die?

Why, why, why.

Let’s face it. You may never know the answers to those questions, unless you have a Joseph AHA moment. And continuing to ask why will only serve to keep you where you are, wallowing in frustration about what happened or didn’t happen.

A more productive question to ask is “What do I do now?”

Or “What is my next step?”

Why is that question more productive? Because it keeps you moving forward. It keeps your focus up in front and not behind you.

We all have plenty of reasons to ask Why. But the wisest will not ask Why. They’ll simply ask, “What now?”
