Speaking to the right side

This Spring as you promote your summer programs and recruit your summer staff don't forget to speak strongly to the right side.

What does that mean?

Remember…the brain has two hemispheres…the left side and the right side. The left side is for all those facts and figures. It's the analytical side of the brain and is full of limits and borders. When you think "inside the box" you're thinking with the left side of your brain.

But the right side of the brain is full of creativity and full of "outside the box" possibilities. When you imagine all the possibilities, you're thinking from the right side of the brain. When you say to the assembled masses, "let me tell you a story…" it's the right side of the audience's brain that sits up and pays attention.

If your promotional materials and powerpoint slides are all about rates and dates, facts and figures, you're speaking to the left side. On the other hand, when you talk about values and possibilities, dreams and destiny you're talking to the much more creative and open side…the right side.

Tell camp stories, relate testimonies from families who have been turned around by your camp or conference center, show pictures of smiling kids faces…glowing from a recent camp experience. Keep the words on your powerpoint slides limited to eight or less. Yes…eight or less.

Remember, people won't leave your promotional dessert talking about the facts or statistics. If all you're going to do is relate facts about your camp or conference program you could save a lot of money and just send a handout for everyone to read.

College kids won't leave your recruiting talk and Facebook their friends about your terms of employment. Especially today, kids don't want a job. They want an experience. They want significance. And they want a story they can tell others.

When people spread the word, they talk about the stuff that amazes them. They talk about the stuff that surprises them, entertains or even outrages them. When you make the commitment to be remarkable and not just normal people will talk.
