Onward!

Onward!

(Thanks to Hugh MacLeod of the Gaping Void for the great artwork)

As you know, this is a season of adventure for me.

(that’s another way of saying “I’m unemployed and I’m looking for another situation!”)

I was looking back through several blog posts in preparation for a book project and I came across a couple of pretty cool “adventure” references.

The first is the actual dictionary definition of the word, “Adventure: a bold, usually risky undertaking; hazardous action of uncertain outcome.”

Yeah, I think that pretty much sums it up.

Just to keep you, dear reader, in the loop; in this season of adventure I am not just sitting still waiting on the phone to ring. I am actively pursuing (re: chasing down!) not only opportunities that have come my way, but I’m excited about the void; venturing into uncharted waters.

The words in that definition both excite me and haunt me. Words like “bold” and “risky” and “hazardous” are all do-able. I mean, hey, life’s a risk right? Even when you have what you believe to be a secure job, you’re only one phone call, meeting or email away from a lay off or firing or discontinuation of your current contract…right?

What really kicks me in the gut are those last two words of the definition: “uncertain outcome.”

To be bold enough to just step out into the void takes a level of faith and trust I’m not sure I have. I’m reminded of the Hebrews crossing the Jordan into the Promised Land. Remember? The priests had to actually step out into the water before it stopped flowing. God wanted them to take the bold, risky and hazardous first step and only then was He going to stop the river from flowing.

The second adventure reference I found is a quote from Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit.

We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things. Make you late for dinner! I can’t think what anybody sees in them.”

So, just so you know…Lainey and I are up for the nasty, disturbing and uncomfortable adventure; the bold, risky and hazardous undertaking with the uncertain outcome. We’re going all in and up for the challenge of passing through the second level to the third (in the cartoon above).

What about you? Is it time for you to take the bold action along with us?

Remember, if it’s safe, secure, and known then it’s not an adventure!

Are you ready to be late for dinner?
