Now comes the mystery

Now comes the mystery

I believe with all my heart that God is mystery or He is nothing.

It’s the unknown about Him that creates the wonder and awe that we are compelled to worship. I think we all know this on one level…so why is it that we demand certainty.

In our humanness, we struggle and strive to take away the mystery–have all the questions answered–remove all the unknowns. But that would never be God’s way. He is the God of mystery and wonder. There will never be a time when I know all the answers. Did you get that? Let me say it again…

There will never be a time when we know all the answers.

Heck, I probably will never know even half the answers! By hiding Himself and His ways he does a couple of very important things.

  1. He reinforces the fact that He is God and that His ways are far above our ways.
  2. He keeps us close. There’s no way we’re going to run too far out in front because we want (need) to see what’s going to happen!

Seth Godin has a quote I like, “If it wasn’t a mystery, it would be easy, it wouldn’t be worth much.”

Amen Seth.

I remember when I was a kid (and truthfully, to this day) I love the mystery of things. I love a wrapped gift, a folded note, a vacation on the calendar. The mystery of what it is or what will happen is one of the great joys of my life.

My parents never had to worry about me sneaking around trying to figure out what my Christmas gifts were. Just holding on to the surprise as long as possible-the mystery of what was in that box was at least as delicious as the present itself.

Have you ever felt that way?

So why do we treat our lives differently? Why do we strive to have all the answers and remove all the mystery in our daily lives?

Let’s stop trying to get it all figured out. Let’s just simply embrace the mystery and relish in the fact that we don’t have all the answers. The Great Adventure wouldn’t be great if you knew everything that was about to happen.

I’ll close with a great quote from the 19th century clergyman Henry Ward Beecher. Just before he died, he took his final breath and said, “Now comes the mystery!” I love that. It’s like walking to the very edge of the 10 meter diving platform, putting your toes on the edge, closing your eyes and…jumping!

One day we will know in full what today we only know in part. Be happy with that.

Embrace the mystery of Him.
