Independence (and dependence) Day!

Independence (and dependence) Day!

Today is the day we celebrate our nation’s independence. On this day in 1776 our founding fathers made the brave choice to sign a document that declared our independence from England’s King George and his oppressive rule.

This day has me thinking a lot about independence and what it really means.

A step towards independence is indeed a bold step. Everyone wants independence from control and oppression. Sure. That’s an easy decision to make. Slavery is never the desired option.

But true independence also means freedom from influence, support, aid, help and anything else. That’s the scary part. Independence means self-sufficiency…we have everything we need within ourselves.

Are we really sure we want to be that independent?

I’m not.

So, yeah, today I will celebrate our nation’s independence with good friends. I will take time to remember the blood that’s been shed by patriots through the ages to make that independence safe and secure. I will thank God for our country and the blessing of being born here…of living my life and raising my kids here.

But I will also use this day to reaffirm my dependence on Him. I am His. I can’t live a day without His grace and His mercy. I’m a mess and I would ruin my own life and the lives of those around me in just a few minutes of trying to do things on my own. Each morning I get up and look for His hand to reach for. I need Jesus. I’m dependent on Him…

Every. Single. Day.

And so are you.

Happy Dependence Day.
